I’m always sucked in when presented with catchy stories like ‘Celebrity Beauty Secrets!’ or ‘How to Look Victoria’s Secret Model Sexy!’ Unfortunately, my intrigue morphs into disappointment as I’m soon left feeling cheated. It’s obvious how most of these stories are trying to sell a brand or a product under the guise of sharing insider knowledge with the reader.

Miranda Kerr regularly communicates to the media that she attributes her flawless skin to Kora organic skincare. And wouldn’t you know it – Kora just so happens to be owned by Miranda herself. Then there’s Kate Moss, who recently divulged her body-beauty secrets to the press by unashamedly promoting St Tropez. Not surprisingly, Kate’s is the current face of the brand.

And don’t get me started with just plain wrong (and potentially dangerous) advice. Like how Gwyneth Paltrow used to publicly praise her strict macrobiotic diet…the same diet which rendered her anaemic, brittle boned and extremely deficient in vitamin D.

Or, remember that time Tyra Banks exposed her ‘big secret’ for keeping wrinkles at bay by using Vaseline? Any dermatologist will tell you how Vaseline only forms a barrier over the skin and provides absolutely no moisturising benefits. Fail.

Completely frustrated with the incessant money making schemes and misinformation, I’ve decided to share with you my top 3 brutally honest beauty secrets. They’re brutally honest because I’m not trying to sell you anything and they ACTUALLY WORK. Even better, I’ve accumulated them backstage at fashion shows and photo shoots direct from the industry professionals themselves.

Working as a model for over a decade, I’ve learnt a plethora of tips and tricks from fellow models, make-up artists, hairdressers, stylists, dermatologists, choreographers, designers – you name it. These tricks work for me, and I’m recommending them based on positive results from my personal experience. So, here are my top brutally honest beauty secrets. Enjoy!

#1 Reduce Cellulite

Expensive creams and treatments don’t work – trust me, I’ve tried! The number one absolute best way to reduce cellulite is to use a dry body brush every day before your shower. Results will vary depending on the individual, however this really works for me and a lot of models use this trick to be bikini ready for the spring summer shows.

The best dry body brush I’ve used so far is one from The Body Shop because it’s made with natural fibres and has strong bristles which really get to work on smoothing the skin. I combine brushing in a circular motion and upward strokes depending on the area being treated. I always start at my feet and end up at my neck, and I dedicate slightly more time to problem areas and lymph nodes.

You’ll reap a host of other benefits from dry body brushing like smoother skin and better circulation, but the noticeable reduction in cellulite is crazy awesome.

#2 Grow Your Hair Long

Going to the hairdressers every six weeks for a trim when you’re trying to grow you hair long is a mistake. Hair grows by an average of 1.25 centimetres per month, so if you’re going to the hairdresser for a trim, you can say bye-bye to the six weeks of hair that you’ve managed to grow.

If you really want to grow your hair mermaid long, you only need a trim every five or six months just to get rid of the straggly ends. Apart from that, you need to let your hair dry naturally as much as possible and avoid heat styling – save the GHD for the weekend or special events.

The only maintenance required is to occasionally trim off the visible split ends yourself using good quality scissors in good light. Five minutes is all it takes to do a quick once over. You won’t get them all but you’ll make a difference to the overall quality of the hair by reducing breakage and frizz.

The final tip is to avoid over-washing your hair – the less handling the better. Washing your hair every second day is fine if you’re a swimmer, marathon runner or Bikram yogi. For the rest of us, washing hair twice a week and using dry-shampoo for in-between days suffices. Pop your hair in a braid for bedtime, and voila! You’ll be on your way to long hair even Rapunzel would be jealous of.

#3 Glowing Skin (Pimple-Free)

A healthy diet, drinking lots of water, sleep, exercise and a perfect skincare routine can only get you so far sometimes. Problem skin like acne, congestion and moisture imbalances can usually be attributed to stress and hormones. You may not be able to beat the stress, but with modern medical advancements, you sure as hell can beat the hormones!

The trick? Find a contraceptive pill that works with your body. (If you’re against the contraceptive pill for religious or personal reasons, please skip to my next beauty tip).  The contraceptive pill works by altering your oestrogen, progesterone and testosterone levels – the very same hormones which decide whether you have breakouts or smooth skin.

Personally, I tried three different versions of the contraceptive pill before I found one that has eliminated congestion and hormonal breakouts. Of course, there can be a number of negative side effects when taking any medication and you should always consult with your doctor.
